The Leadership Assembly for the Junior School Leaders was held on Monday 30 January in the LPAC Theatre for fellow Junior School students and their parents.
The 13 newly appointed Year 6 Leaders, embraced their new positions with honour and pride.

During our first week of Prep, we have discussed classroom and playground rules and expectations whilst learning about school-based routines. The students have been learning to follow their new Prep routines by placing their bags in their lockers, lining up in two lines and singing our morning songs. There have been many enjoyable and creative learning opportunities, with playdough activities, name clouds and cutting practice being at the top of many students’ lists.
In Prep, we value character strengths as they help us build friendships and engage effectively in classroom and play experiences. The students have been learning that everyone has different character strengths, which makes us unique but when we come together, we complement each other. In our play yard, this has been seen as they have been navigating a new environment, social interactions and flourishing friends through negotiating, taking turns and resolving disputes using the High 5 Strategy (Ignore, Talk friendly, Walk away, Talk firmly and Report).
The students were full of excitement as they got to meet their Year 6 buddies. Once paired up, the Preps had the opportunity to play, interact with and learn from their buddy. They had great fun getting to know each other and engage in numerous play experiences. Our buddy program supports social and emotional confidence through supportive relationships and provides a leadership opportunity for our Year 6 students.
With new learning experiences, comes new and unfamiliar challenges. In Prep, we have been practicing the use of a Growth Mindset to help gain confidence and develop skills. This challenges the students to redirect their thinking from a Fixed Mindset to a Growth Mindset, by using phrases such as “I’ll give it a go” and “mistakes are also a discovery” to progress our learning.
During their first week of schooling, the Preps have met their specialist teachers and participated in Health and Physical Education (HPE), Japanese, Music and Library lessons. Our College is a big place, and we are getting to know our way around, as we have travelled to music classrooms, participated in HPE lessons on the Taylor Dostal Oval and engaged in reading experiences in the Lilly Pilly Library.
As Prep teachers, we are looking forward to discovering more about our students’ preferences so we can work towards setting individual goals. This year holds many wonderful experiences, and we are excited to journey on a rewarding adventure together with our Prep students.

On 30 November 2022 it was my absolute pleasure to attend the Australian Maths Trust Competition Awards at Anglican Church Grammar School in Brisbane.
A.B. Paterson College excelled in this competition with five of our students being placed on the 2022 AMC High Achiever List.
Congratulations to Lucas Wang, Yuzhe Liu, Aiden Zhang, Byron McNiven and Matilda Grant (who also received the Best in School award).

The biennial Australian Open Chess Championships is one of Australia's premier chess events. In January 2023, this event was run by the Chess Association of Western Australia, on behalf of the Australian Chess Federation.
The Australian Open was an 11-round Swiss system competition, open to all players regardless of rating. The 2023 Australian Minor was an 11-round Swiss system tournament, running parallel to the Australian Open. The Minor was restricted to players rated below 1500 FIDE (International rating).
This year A.B. Paterson College students, Alexander and Rachel Feldblyum participated in the Minor division. After eight days of competing in the tournament in Perth, Alex demonstrated outstanding performance in playing against 11 opponents. He came 2nd in the Australian Minor Championship and took 1st place in the Under 1300 rating category. At the same time, Rachel was also glad she got such experience participating in an international level tournament and ended up coming 43rd.

The College's Sustainability Committee are aiming to raise funds to donate to The School of St Jude https://www.schoolofstjude.org/. The goal is 7,200 containers this year which will raise enough money to sponsor a scholarship for a child in Tanzania for a year.

I am delighted to join A.B. Paterson College as a specialist Speech and Drama Teacher for Prep to Year 3 students. My aim is to encourage and develop confidence in each child through performance and presentation.
Classes are available in groups of four, with eight lessons per term, and during school hours. Students have the opportunity to work towards performing at concerts and eisteddfods.
Enrolments are now open for Term 1.
The Kids' Guitar Club at the College is for 6 to 8-year-olds - absolute beginners
Greg Apps Casting are casting for the Australian feature film "Take My Hand" to be filmed in Bryon Bay from March 6 to May 9.
The main family in the film has three sons. They age from 6 to 15 years. The story spans several years so they have to match different boys to play the same character at different ages.
The company is looking for two or three boys in these ages that look alike and fair skinned.
Auditions are being held this Saturday 4 February in Bryon Bay. If any families are interested and would like to be considered, then they should arrive between 1:30pm and 3:30pm at 3/64 Centennial Ave, Bryon Bay.
There is also a large supporting role for a 15 year old girl to play the role of the daughter in the family.
