Under plans lodged with the Gold Coast City Council last Friday, the owners of the course have offered the land parcel, worth many millions of dollars, to the school to create sports and recreation facilities.

Our Prep and Year 1 students meet on Tuesday afternoons in the Lilly Pilly Learning Centre and our Year 2 and Year 3 students meet on Wednesday afternoons. We also have a growing number of ‘Green Jackets’ – who are our Senior School volunteers. These young women help organise and manage our program, while forming wonderful relationships with our youngest students.
The term ‘Green Jackets’ started several years ago when the original group of volunteers were students in Year 10, 11 and 12 (and wear their green jackets as part of their uniform). Our volunteer program has grown, and we now have incredible volunteers starting in Year 6. A large amount of gratitude must be shown for this group of young women, as they epitomize our College motto ‘Excellence, Care and Commitment’. We can always depend on our volunteers – even having our oldest senior school students coming to volunteer during their exam week and making the extra commitment to be on campus when regular classes were on hiatus.
This term we highlighted the festivals and events that the term brings. Being project based, we developed our fine motor skills while exploring the concepts of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths. We worked to create seven different projects, each week of the Term 1 program.
The term started off by working in small groups to create gumdrop geodesic domes using only toothpicks and gumdrops. We were impressed with our ability – both to make the domes, and to not eat the gumdrops (until we were picked up by family and given permission, at least!).
The next week was a celebration of Valentine’s Day, where were learned about cupid and his bow and arrow. We took it one step further and created our own bow and arrows using paddle pop sticks and dental floss, with cotton buds as our arrows. It was a tricky task, but we persevered. A special thanks to James’ dad who experimented more at home and came in the follow week to show us how we could perfect the project – using different materials. The students were very impressed!
Everyone enjoys having a go with our VR googles, and students (and their families) enjoyed entering the virtual world and competing against themselves on ‘Beat Saber’. Students also had the ability to try some fun apps on our iPads, including working with Scratch Jr.
Slime was next on the agenda – a staple on the term time Makerspace calendar. This was ewwy-gooy fun as we measured ingredients and talked to the scientific elements of making slime. Families were filled with a mix of fear and gratitude at pick up time – fear of what was coming home with them, but gratitude that the slime was made at school and not in their own homes!
Our fifth session week got us ready for the Easter season by taking part in an egg drop. Students worked in teams to create a structure to protect a raw egg, that each team dropped off the Prep balcony above the Lilly Pilly Learning Centre. Students had a great time cheering each other on – and only a few teams had to do the chicken dance, when their egg didn’t survive the fall.
The following week was St Patrick’s Day and our Makerspacers became Little Leprechauns. Each were given a small black caldron and a pipette – where they could experiment and mix the ‘potions’ materials to create rainbow explosions in their pots. All students were thrilled that their magic and imaginations led to finding real gold (chocolate) coins in their pots, at the end of the rainbow (session).
The tradition continues – and we ended our Makerspace program by making ice cream and discussing the Science behind this. The delicious final project is created with basic ingredients, plastic bags and kid-power. There was laughter and a lot of energy as students mixed their ingredients and shook and rocked their ice cream into a beautiful afternoon dessert. We ended the term with sticky smiles (fingers and uniforms).
Our Prep to Year 3 Makerspace program will begin again in Week 3 of Term 2. We look forward to working with a new group of students to create together.
Happy Holidays as the term draws to a close.

Over the past week, five of our talented Brumbies travelled to Tasmania to take part in the Australian School Sport Triathlon/Aquathlon Championships. Given the nature of the sport, to even qualify for this event is an amazing achievement considering the amount of training required across the disciplines.
Not only did our students qualify, but all five students finished top 20 in Australia in their respective divisions!
Congratulations to the following students for their performances in Tasmania:
Nathan Burgess | Director of Activities
The 15km walk started at Polly’s kitchen in the Gold Coast Hinterland, and students and staff walked part of the very hilly Pinnacle Circuit.
Thank you to staff members, Tennille Mitchell - HPE Teacher, Stephen Cooke - Director of Corporate Services and Andrew Sole - Head of Outdoor Education, for accompanying the students.
Soroptimist International has invited A.B. Paterson College students to take part in a Living with Nature Art Competition.
The competition aims to create global awareness about the future relationship between humans and the environment through the eyes of younger generations.
Cash prizes for each age category. Ages 7-12 will share their ideas through visual art. Ages 13-18 are invited to make a poster or video which addresses environmental concerns or gender equality linked to the UN’s SDGs.
