Living our Mission!
The College Mission is to ‘challenge the individual to achieve, and to act with purpose and character.’ Each student has open to them a range of learning activities at the College through both our academic program and our co-curricular activities which allows each student the opportunity to grow as an individual and to find purpose in the experiences they are afforded. One such example of these opportunities, is the College’s commitment to both our Service-learning Program and our community charities via our House fundraising program.
Throughout the year, Prep students have been considering the concept of help. Learning about people who help them, and considering how they can help others – classmates, members of the College community, and members of the wider community. As a result of this work, this week our Prep students had the opportunity to visit Seachange Arundel as an opportunity to ‘help’ those in the wider College community by performing a mini concert for the residents. To say our visit was a success would be a huge understatement not only for our Prep students who were excited about helping out, but also for our audience, at one point, I don't think there was a dry eye from the teaching staff when the residents rose at the conclusion to the student performance and promptly broke into their own lively rendition of, ‘We Wish you a Merry Christmas’ not once but twice! The absolute beauty of Service-learning is that it is reciprocal in nature in that both the helper and the helpee benefit which is evidenced in the follow up email I received after the event:
On behalf of Seachange, we would like to thank you so much for a lovely afternoon's entertainment, and the delicious afternoon tea. Those in attendance all thoroughly enjoyed the show, and were most impressed with how well behaved the Preps were, and so confident. We certainly look forward to future visits.
Next week, our College community will come together once again for our Mackellar and Wright House Novelty Fun Run extravaganza! If you haven’t already done so, please log onto Parent Lounge and accept the Terms and Conditions so that your child can participate, this is sure to be an afternoon of much laughter and enjoyment.
By participating in Service-learning and supporting our community charities, students continue to understand the value of engagement with their community knowing that they are actively making a meaningful difference in that community.
