Over the course of one action-packed day, an aspiring group of our Year 6-8 Honours students heard from community changemakers, developed their leadership and innovation skills with hands-on activities, and explored what initiatives they can launch to make change in their local community, as they met other aspiring Generation Z and Generation Alpha young leaders from schools across the Gold Coast.
By utilising the principles of design thinking, our Honours students, Catey Brookes, Alyssa Fu, Ivy Hamilton, Calvin Liu, Maxim Nadezhdin, Aarya Rudrawar, Sriram Sahishnu, Jinyu Yan and Peter Zhu, embarked on a series of activities that enabled them to develop deep understanding of the challenges facing diverse communities worldwide.
Throughout the day, students worked through a fast-paced design sprint as they formed teams, identified a problem to solve, researched solutions around the world, and created an impactful solution localised to their community and their users. At the conclusion of the program students pitched their finalised ideas.

Mayor’s Technology and Innovation Awards
We are excited to share that two teams from A.B. Paterson College proudly competed in the Mayor’s Technology and Innovation Awards. After a month of hard work and dedication, our students presented their innovative solutions to the community at last Thursday’s prestigious event.
Our teams:
Peter Zhu and Calvin Liu (Voyage)
Matilda Grant and Tianyu Shen (SmartSpender)
These talented students have been working diligently to solve real-world community problems through technology and innovation. Their creativity and effort culminated in impressive presentations that left a lasting impact.
The innovative solutions:
SmartSpender is a groundbreaking marketplace platform that supports Gold Coast consumers by offering real-time grocery price comparisons, personalised discount recommendations, and a food donation system. It helps local businesses thrive while tackling the cost-of-living crisis.
Voyage is an AR and VR travel app that enhances the Gold Coast tourism experience by offering virtual tours, interactive experiences, and personalized recommendations, helping tourists connect with local businesses before and during their stay.

Student Achievements in Pickleball Championships
Congratulations to three A.B. students; Benjamin Clark, Javier Segui (Year 7) and Lachlan Donnelly (Year 11).
During this past long weekend, there was one of the biggest sport events on the Gold Coast which was Australian Pickleball Championships. As you might have already known that pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the country and they are trying to add pickleball in Brisbane Olympics in 2032. This year there were over 1,200 players from all around Australia and New Zealand plus some other countries participated.
It was the first time for Javier to play in this sport. He and Benjamin played in under 18 boys doubles division (they both were the youngest with only 12 years old). They did amazingly well having lots of closed games and lost by only 1 or 2 points in their round robin but still not enough to beat all those bigger boys. They both also played in under 14 boys singles. Benjamin achieved gold and Javier achieved bronze medals.
Lachlan Donnelly did really well at Queensland Championships and did incredibly well in this Australian Championships. He won the Triple Crown - gold in under 18 boys doubles, gold in under 18 mixed doubles and gold in under 18 boys singles!!!! He also played in one of the adult divisions and got to a round of 16.
Congratulations to Lachy Donnelly who played in the PPA Tour Australia Gold Coast Open which was held on 29 August to 1 September 2024. The final match was a showcase of exceptional young talent, with both players engaging in a series of thrilling rallies that captivated the audience. Lachy demonstrated remarkable professionalism and composure to emerge as the PPA Tour Australia Junior Singles Champion, securing the Gold Medal.
Lachy recently played in two more significant competitions with the below outstanding achievements.
During the September school holidays Lachy played in the (WPC) World Pickleball Championships in Bali, Indonesia. He and his teammate, Teak from Thailand, played incredibly, undefeated through the groups and elimination rounds to reach the finals. They played a tough final against some strong opponents and came away with the Silver Medal.
WPC World Pickleball Championships (Bali)
Silver Medalist U18 Open Doubles
This Weekend Lachy played in the Australian Pickleball Championships held here on the Gold Coast. Lachy played exceptional in all 3 divisions earning a Gold Medal in each. Achieving Gold Medals in each division also earned Lachy the Triple Crown Status acknowledged by Pickleball Australia Association that only a few elite players have achieved.

Gold Medal - U18 Open Singles
Lachy's tournament achievements this year has cemented his spot as the #1 Junior in Australia .

Student Achievements - Sunny & Rocky Liu
Congratulations to Sunny and Rocky Liu who recently represented the college at the prestigious Australian Honours Ensemble Programme.
During the second week of the holidays, the boys were immersed in an intensive and challenging three days of instrumental training and rehearsals, culminating in a wonderful concert at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music.
For both Sunny and Rocky, it was the second year in a row of being selected to participate in the program. Rocky was the youngest of the 82 student participants selected into the Wind Orchestra program, whilst Sunny was one of only 22 students selected into the AHEP Big Band.
The boys enjoyed lessons delivered by internationally renowned musicians and educators, and we are very proud of the way they represented both the college and the Arts Faculty at this fabulous event.
