Students and teachers have safely landed in the U.S. ahead of the World Scholar's Cup Global Round at the prestigious Yale University.

Even amidst their travels, they have been diligently committed to preparing for the competition, studying both in the air and on the ground! They stocked up with study snacks at the supermarket and registered for their events, and we can't wait to hear how they go!

Our World Scholar's Cup team is having an amazing time at the competition and exploring the beautiful campus of Yale University!

They have been keeping busy with a packed schedule, including collaborating with students from across the globe, embarking on an evening ghost tour, and celebrating a special milestone - Happy 16th Birthday, Sunny! 

They tackled the biggest day of the competition with the challenge, writing and debating components, AKA, "Triple Threat." Our students were very successful and each team walked away with at least one win from their debates

We cannot wait to see what challenges and adventures lie ahead for our students!

Our World Scholar's Cup students have continued their American adventures with a day trip to Boston, hearing the history behind the city and visiting iconic landmarks.

They were particularly excited to see the Omni Parker House where Charles Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol!

They stopped in at the iconic Massachusetts Institute of Technology and toured campus with a nuclear engineer student as their guide! Everyone, especially our future engineers, mathematicians and scientists, were inspired.

More celebrations took place for a very special occasion - Happy 15th Birthday, Louise!

The College was excited to have attended the inaugural Queensland All Schools Athletics Championships. Thirteen students represented the College and competed against students from high-performing schools' athletics programs across Queensland.

It was pleasing to see our students excel in their respective fields and achieve personal bests in the high standard of competition. Congratulations to all those involved for their results, and we look forward to building on these achievements in 2024.

A special mention must be made to Samuel Brookes (Year 11), Gabi Cannen (Year 9) and Hudson Schultz (Year 7) for placing in the top 3 and earning a place on the Queensland Team for the Nationals in April 2024.

Over the weekend, students competed in the Queensland Primary All Schools Touch Tournament, hosted by the Redlands Touch Association. Both boys and girls teams showed continued improvement and impressive teamwork throughout the tournament.

On Saturday 4 November, the boys' team, coached by Tait Rolfe, finish the day with two losses and two convincing wins. Throughout the day the team played well together to score some amazing tries and defend some tough competition.

Led by Kaden Arnold, the girls' team kept improving with each game, gaining confidence and becoming more competitive. Their spirits grew after a draw against Unity College in their third game, and the excitement was shared by all after a convincing win in their final game of the day against Stretton.

Both the boys’ and girls’ teams secured the third position in their respective pools and qualified through to the ‘Palte’ Finals.

On Sunday 5 November, the girls' final match was a nail-biter, with both teams giving their all. In the end, the girls narrowly went down 1-0 but left the field with their heads held high, knowing they had given it their all.

The boys' team managed to advance to through to the quarter final, after a convincing win against Cleveland B. After torrential rain postponed the tournament for well over an hour, the boys’ adapted to the conditions as best they could, however eventually lost in a 3 on 3 drop off. Despite the disappointment of not progressing through to the semi-finals, the experience gained from this tournament will put them in good stead for future competitions.

Our Brumbies showed great dedication, teamwork, and sportsmanship throughout the tournament. Congratulations to both teams on their great performance and a huge thank you to Dean West, Kate Lawrence, Tait Rolfe and Kaden Arnold for coaching the teams.

In Week 5 our new and exciting Brumbies Development Academies were launched for selected sports of the Season 1 APS 2024 schedule. Rugby, Netball and Football have scheduled extra gym and field/court training session to improve the development of our student athletes. The program will see these groups training hard in a mini pre-season before the holidays with a large focus on physical development and skills.

The program was launched with inductions sessions, assisted by some special guests arriving to inform our students about the joys of training together with friends at school. James slipper, Wallabies international attended the rugby session and local netball talent, Jess Milne was present for our netballers.

The students worked their hardest in these sessions and now begin full training plans this week. The overall buzz of the program is high, and we look forward to seeing the training culture and standards of our student athletes improve.

Thank you to all the coaches involved, the students and their parents for getting them to school much earlier than normal.

We will continue to update the school on our success as we reach the later stage of the Development programs.

Over the last school holidays, Samuel Blanc in Year 4 and his pony, Kristamoor Lodge Kieran, travelled over 3,466km to represent Queensland and the College at the Equestrian Australia Interschool National Championships in Werribee, Victoria.

Sam and Kieran had a wonderful competition, riding away with 5th place in the very competitive Primary Show Hunter class.

Sam was also named in the four-member Queensland Primary Team who placed 3rd overall! 

A fantastic achievement considering he was one of the youngest riders at the competition!

It was an amazing experience for Sam with over 500 competitors and their horses representing every state and territory in Australia, coming together to compete over five action filled days. The team spirit in the Queensland camp was contagious, and the sea of maroon supporters cheering on fellow competitors was a sight to behold.

The Year 4 students at A.B. Paterson College have been diving into an array of thrilling activities that have been keeping them engaged and enthusiastic this term! In this newsletter, we are delighted to highlight a snapshot of some of the exciting parts of our curriculum, sports training, and their growing commitment to environmental sustainability.

Reader's Theatre: A Journey into Literature

Our Year 4 students have embarked on a literary adventure by participating in fantastic fluency opportunities in Reader's Theatre. This innovative approach to reading not only promotes a love for literature but also enhances the students' reading and public speaking skills. Through Reader's Theatre, they bring stories to life by acting out various roles from a script, making learning English fun and interactive.

The benefits of Reader's Theatre extend beyond the classroom. It helps in developing confidence, teamwork, and an appreciation for storytelling. Our students are not just reading; they are becoming the characters, narrators, and even directors of their own mini theatrical productions!

Sports Training: Developing Skills and Sportsmanship

Year 4 students are not only excelling academically but also athletically. The students have been actively participating in sports training sessions, where they are developing their skills in various sports, learning the importance of teamwork, and developing good sportsmanship. These activities not only promote physical fitness but also build social and emotional skills. We encourage our students to embrace the joy of competition and learn valuable life lessons on and off the field.

Sustainability: Use, Reuse, and Recycle

Teaching our students about environmental responsibility is a priority at A.B. Paterson College. The Year 4 students have been enthusiastically taking part in initiatives to look after the environment through the principles of "Use, Reuse, and Recycle." They have been learning about the significance of reducing waste and conserving resources.

Through engaging lessons and hands-on activities, students have been discovering creative ways to repurpose materials, reduce their carbon footprint, and contribute to a cleaner, greener planet. It is inspiring to witness our students so actively involved in becoming responsible environmental citizens, and their efforts are sure to make a positive impact in the years to come.

We are proud of the Year 4 students for their dedication to their education, sportsmanship, and environmental awareness.

This term Year 3 students have been learning the art of sculpture and movement through the works of Alberto Giacometti. We have learnt that he was famous for his extremely small sculptures of people in particular.

We began by reviewing ‘form’ as an element of art. We then moved on to review dance shapes or movement forms (twist, bend, stretch, curve, angle, spin, twirl). Finally, it was time to sketch our ideas. These ideas came to life through the molding and shaping of the humble tin foil.

Using our tinfoil creations, we then went on to create three separate art works.

For our first piece, we covered our tinfoil sculpture in paper Mache. Once all that had all dried, we set about painting our masterpieces. Finally, we added the finishing touches to our “life sculptures”.

Our second piece was about shadow. We traced around our next sculpture’s shadow and then creatively added a continuous pattern.

Our third and final piece, involved mimicking a dance/ movement pose by using small body parts.

It was so much fun being allowed to choose our own pose and create our own mini sculptures.

Spring has sprung for the Junior school Busy bees!

We have been busy planting for spring/summer and ensuring we are able to keep our gardens watered with all the dry weather lately.

Junior school students have been planting many new varieties, including cucumbers, passionfruit and rosemary. Along with collecting compost to feed our worm family! Please head to Barton 4 and place any unwanted fruit or vegetable scraps in the compost bucket at the door.

We were lucky enough to visit David Fleay Wildlife Park in Term 3 and they have donated five Birdwing Butterfly vines that are now planted in the Busy Bees garden. These vines are the lifeline of the threatened Richmond Birdwing Butterfly, that is only found in this region of Queensland and northern NSW. Students have been very protective of the vines and are keeping a keen eye out for any of these species that begin to make the vines and the College their home.

Busy bees are also beginning the process of Native Bee conservation. We are growing flower seedlings that are popular with the bee community in the hopes of increasing their population and pollination in and around the College.

Lastly, the Busy Bee’s would like to ask for any tin can donations. We would like to get creative at the end of this term and give the garden a burst of colour. Please bring any clean can donations to Barton 4 (Year 3H) classroom.
