APS Athletics 2024

2024 has marked another year of growth for A.B. Brumbies Athletics. For the first year, we had all three days of our interhouse carnivals at external venues where students could experience competition at an international standard athletics facility. Following on from the success during the Queensland Athletics season earlier in the year, the team produced some outstanding individual and team results.

Following the interhouse carnivals, students were selected based on their placings. Students had the opportunity to attend four training sessions at the Gold Coast Performance Centre over the holidays, additional to the jam-packed weekly timetable. All sessions were well attended with students attending training regularly to improve their performance. It was positive to see strong performances from those who attended training regularly, a credit to their commitment and the program offered at the college.

Congratulations to the 160 A.B. Paterson College students who represented the college at the APS Athletics Carnivals held over three days at Somerset College. Across all three days, we saw students achieving personal bests in both the field and on the track.

  • Junior School: Overall 7th Place and Percentage 7th Place
  • Secondary School: Overall 5th Place and Percentage 7th Place

A special congratulations to the following students who were awarded Age Champion Awards for outstanding performances across multiple events.

  • Tristian Osborne - 12 Year Boys - 2nd Place
  • Ethan McIntyre - 14 Year Boys - 3rd Place
  • Toby Rayner - Open Boys - 3rd Place

Special thanks go to our coaches, without their support we would not be able to offer the great training opportunities for our students. Collectively, they offered 15 training sessions per week and facilitated our best athletics training attendance on record. Special thanks to Mrs Tennille Mitchell, Ms Sona Preiszlerova, Mrs Brooke Whittington, Mr Steve Jackson, Mr Ryan Sydenham, Ms Emelia Surch, Ms Sally Gordon, Brett Green and Noah Fielding.

The impact of these coaches was evident at the APS Carnivals, where those who committed to regular training exhibited not only great technique but also a confidence that facilitated their success. As we reflect on this remarkable year, we are reminded these exceptional coaches have paved the way for our determined young athletes.

As we move forward in the Athletics Program, we look to supporting the students progressing in the School Sport and Queensland Athletics pathways and developing our athletes long term. Our athletics training program operates year-round, ensuring consistent development for all event groups. Our current schedule guarantees a minimum of one weekly session for every participant. While our program is ideal for those aiming to excel in athletics, its advantages extend well beyond the track and field.

The skills developed through athletics offer benefits that are directly applicable to team sports. Imagine sprinting past opponents on the field with explosive speed, leaping higher on the court for that crucial rebound, or delivering precision passes to your teammates. These are just a few examples of how our athletics training equips you to excel in team-based activities.

Please see the A.B Connect ‘Athletics Program’ group for updated and further information.
