The Senior cohort had a wonderful first week immersing themselves in the many events to signify their commencement of their senior year. On Tuesday 28 February, they were inducted with a fitting ceremony which saw Principal Ms Johanne Sheehy encourage the students to strive for excellence and consider their contribution to the history of this wonderful College.
Gabriella Cannen, Year 11 student and Stella Godfrey, Year 6 students presented a heartfelt student response, with Gabriella quoting, "don’t fear failure. Be afraid of not having the chance", from the movie Cars, and Stella sharing that, "Leadership comes in many forms. Embrace who you are and be authentic". It was a lovely response for the Year 12 students, who received their senior badges and proudly recited their senior pledge.
Later that week from Thursday 30 January to Saturday 1 February, the Year 12 students then embarked on their Year 12 Leadership Camp.
Leading with the Year 12 Jersey Presentation, Day 1 comprised of the RAW Challenge, set in the beautiful surrounds of Numinbah Valley, the obstacle course tested students physical and mental toughness as well as their ability to work and support each other through.
That afternoon, students continued their journey to the very scenic Tyalgum Ridge Retreat which is over 350 acres and nestled high in the northwest perimeter of the Tweed Valley, flanked by three spectacular World Heritage National Parks, and offered breathtaking views of Mt Warning, ancient rainforests, fast-flowing creeks, and waterfalls. Students had some down time before formal dance practise and a campfire with marshmallows, music, plenty of stories, laughter and memories.
On Day 2 students divided up into 6 groups and rotated through activities that included archery, canoeing, team building, high ropes/flying fox, a waterfall hike and damper making over a fire. For each activity, students were able to build their collaborative skills working together to support one another through some very hot and at times physically testing conditions. At night, students gathered around the campfire once again to roast marshmallows and continue to build strong connections with the rest of their cohort.
It was wonderful to see their bond and their personal growth throughout these days, and Day 3 saw students work together to pack up before returning back to the College.
Well done to the students for this wonderful week of events and also to the staff who organised and worked to support students throughout.
