Mathematics

At A.B. Paterson College, we view Mathematics as not just a compulsory subject for the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE), but as an exciting, dynamic, and engaging field of study. While it is essential for numeracy, it also allows us to explore the beauty of abstract thinking and problem-solving. What begins as foundational numeracy evolves into the fascinating world of algebra, enabling us to understand and interpret the world around us.

From Year 2 to Year 10, all students at A.B. Paterson College study General Mathematics, building their numeracy skills in line with the Australian Curriculum. This solid foundation in mathematics evolves into more complex algebraic and statistical skills.

At the end of Year 10, students can choose the mathematics pathway that best aligns with their strengths, interests, and goals for Year 11 and beyond.

For most students, Mathematical Methods will be the primary focus, diving into more complex algebraic concepts while encouraging the ability to analyse and interpret the world around them. Some students may choose General Mathematics, which focuses on practical, real-world applications to help prepare for life after school. For those with a deep passion for advanced mathematical concepts, Specialist Mathematics offers an enriching and challenging extension, pushing students toward a sophisticated understanding of the subject.

At A.B. Paterson College, we aim to cultivate an understanding of the Australian Curriculum and an appreciation for Mathematics as a discipline. Our teachers encourage curiosity, critical thinking, and a genuine love of learning. By building strong relationships with students in a supportive environment, we foster a culture where every question is valued, and growth is celebrated.

Through this approach, we aspire to help students develop into inquisitive and logical thinkers, ready to navigate the complexities of the world and contribute thoughtfully to their communities. With the guidance of their Mathematics teachers and the support of their families, each student is empowered to reach their full potential.
