Prep is the first formal year of schooling at A.B. Paterson College. The students are engaged in stimulating and developmentally appropriate activities in a vibrant environment. Creativity is nurtured and acknowledged, to foster confidence and independence. Prep students are challenged and supported to develop the skills and attributes to achieve their goals and passions.
As students enter A.B. Paterson College, they bring with them a wealth of experiences and a range of understandings. Our academic program caters for all levels of development, allowing students to progress through the teaching and learning process in a rewarding manner. The Australian Curriculum forms the basis for lessons in English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography and the Arts. Prep students participate in specialist lessons in Music and Physical Education and visit the Library weekly. Swimming lessons in Terms 1 and 4 form part of the Physical Education program. All Prep students have the opportunity to be a member of the Prep Choir and perform at College events.
Pastoral Care teaches the key skills that aid intellectual and social development. The Teaching for Understanding (TfU) framework underpins the teaching philosophy at A.B. Paterson College. Through differentiated and supportive programs, each child develops a range of complex skills pertinent to their individual level of maturity and ability. Play is enhanced in an imaginative and flexible classroom and playground environment.
Each Prep class has one Teacher and a trained Learning Assistant, who works closely with the teacher to support both the academic and the social and emotional development of each student. The support of parents in their child’s education is welcomed and valued. A positive student, parent and teacher relationship is a vital component in attaining successful learning outcomes.
By the end of the Prep year, students will have gained independence, developed positive friendships and are equipped with valuable skills to support them in their learning journey.
