Tennis is often regarded as the ‘gentleman’s sport’, due to the courteous nature, honesty and integrity of those taking part. Of course, at A.B Paterson College both boys and girls play tennis. In fact, unlike most other sports played at the school, tennis is a sporting option students can choose in both semesters. We are truly an all year sport for those who participate, and we pride ourselves on our sporting conduct and positive team spirit.
Because tennis is such a popular sport at the College, training takes place at a number of tennis centres in the Gold Coast region. These include Runaway Bay, Queens Park and Nerang Tennis Centres. For matches, as part of the APS competition, our ‘home’ ground is Queens Park in Southport. Each girl and boy squad is made up of three teams. We have an A, B and C team for Opens (Years 10–12) and an A, B and C team for Juniors (Years 7–9). In Semester 1, Years 4–6 also have an opportunity to select tennis as their sport of choice.
All players are expected to have their own racquet, although those new to the sport can borrow a racquet whilst they learn how to play. Additional coaching also takes place during the year as part of pre-arranged sessions.
