Steven Mikael and Peter Brookes, Head and Assistant Head of the HPE Faculty, present at the ACHPER conference

In August, 2014, Steven Mikael, Head of Health and Physical Education, and Peter Brookes, Assistant Head of HPE, presented to a large audience of physical educators and sports providers at the Brisbane HPE Conference of the Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (ACHPER).  This was the third year that Steven had been asked to present his work on Neuroscience and the benefits of Physical Education lessons on greater cognitive functioning processes and academic achievement.  This was the basis of his Masters thesis, based on extensive research and the surveying of teachers, in which it was found that an increase in regulated Physical Education lessons provided by specialist teachers has a profound beneficial effect on academic performance, through improved levels of concentration, focus and achievement.

The presentation was very well received by the audience of teachers from around Queensland, with a number of schools since making contact to seek further information and guidance. It is testament to the fact that Steven Mikael is a leader in the field of implementing this research into educational practice, that Health and Physical Education is such a fundamental part of the curriculum at A.B. Paterson College, at a time when many other schools are cutting the time and resources provided to the subject.
