Students at A.B. Paterson College are offered free instrumental tuition and hire as part of the Year 4 Academic Music programme. In 2016, a new instrumental initiative was introduced for Year 5. Details of this programme can be accessed below. These lessons are timetabled for 30 minutes each week and are offered on a rotational basis, with preference for before and after school lessons given to Year 12 students.
At such a time that a student progresses to a suitable standard, they are placed into a College ensemble that best reflects their interest. We currently offer a comprehensive band programme that incorporates Year 4 Band, Junior Band, Intermediate Band and Senior Band, as well as Big Band, which operates as an extension ensemble. Our strings department also offers a Junior and Senior Strings ensemble, as well as a Guitar Ensemble.
Instrumental tutors direct small ensembles including Saxophone Quartet, String Quartet, Piano Trio and Flute Trio, dependent on student interest each year. We anticipate that new groups, including Junior Big Band and Chamber Orchestra, will be developed in the very near future.
As ensemble playing is perhaps the most joyous and collaborative element of being a musician, we certainly promote and encourage involvement in the ensemble programme at A.B. Paterson College.
As Steven Van Zandt so eloquently stated, ‘Band members have a special bond. A great band is more than just some people working together. It's like a highly specialized army unit, or a winning sports team. A unique combination of elements that becomes stronger together than apart.’
