The Girls’ Football program runs teams from Years 4 -12 in the APS competition. We have a well-structured coaching development plan that aims to give our girls the opportunity to develop their individual and team skills, whilst enjoying the world game.

There are a number of experienced and enthusiastic coaches leading the program, including College Principal, Brian Grimes, Ric Cashman, and Head of Girls’ Football, Peter Brookes. We have also begun a programme to train and retain our senior players as coaches and role models for our younger players in the future, ensuring that every player receives coaching that is organised, structured, extending and fun.

In the past year, we have taken the Open A girls to Adelaide for a nine day playing and training tour; run in-house coaching certification sessions through Football Gold Coast; taken girls to see A-League and W-League fixtures; and hosted schools from Brisbane and Toowoomba for additional fixtures.

All of this will carry on in the future, with the aims

  • Of promoting a love of participating in Football
  • Developing the character, team work and leadership skills of our players
  • Producing successful teams and individuals for the long term.

Boys’ Football is a very popular sport at A.B. Paterson College, being suitable for all boys from Years 4-12. In the past few years, the A.B. Paterson College Boys’ Open team has placed first on many occasions, with strong performances across the year levels. We usually field one team in each year level from Years 7 -12, but the game is so popular in the Junior School that there are normally two teams in each of the Years 4 – 6 age groups. Games are played both at home and away against the other APS schools, with opportunities also to play in non-APS competitions.

Our program, led by Paul Dilkes, caters for all levels of ability. Mr Dilkes is a Health and Physical Education teacher in the Senior School, with extensive experience of training drills, and has successfully coached a range of age group teams. The Football program is designed to be progressive, with each year building and developing the essential individual and team skills.

The Open team has been expertly coached by Victor Laredo-Rodriguez for a number of years. Under the guidance of Mr Laredo-Rodriguez, the Open teams have enjoyed enormous success and have constantly drawn on his passion and knowledge of the game. All teams have excellent coaching from either staff members or expert outside coaches to further their ability. Some teams are coached by A.B. Paterson College past-students, with the aim of ensuring enjoyment at all levels of ability and furthering our links with our Old Collegians. All coaches attend the “in-house” coaching course at the beginning of the season, and are given the opportunity to complete Level 1 coaching and refereeing courses, to ensure they have current knowledge of the rules and the latest training drills.

Training takes place in age groups on Monday afternoons after school, 3.30 – 5.00pm, under the constant supervision of the coaches.
