Structure of A.B. Paterson College Limited

With an aim of providing the opportunity for young people who live in regions other than South-East Queensland to experience our leading pedagogy and unique brand of education which challenges the individual to achieve, and to act with purpose and character, A.B. Paterson College will develop multiple campuses and learning centres throughout Australia. These campuses will be geared to the needs of the community while delivering the excellence, care and commitment that our brand of education is renowned for.

The individual College campuses and Early Learning Centres are led by an individual Principal/Head of College or Director of Early Learning. These educational leaders report to the Executive Principal/Chief Executive Officer of the overall entity and form part of the entity’s Executive Team. 

A.B. Paterson College Limited is a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee and incorporated under the Corporations Act. The College is governed by a Board of six Directors, with up to four additional Directors co-opted by the Board, to provide a broadly based set of professional skills and experiences.

A.B. Paterson College’s Governance Framework is the Foundation of the College’s Operations. The Framework provides guidance for effective decision-making in all areas of the College, through the leadership of the College’s Executive and College Board.

Chairman – David Tanner

David Tanner was elected to the Board of A.B. Paterson College in 2011, and was later appointed as the third Chairman of the Board in 2013. A past parent of the College, Mr Tanner has a significant interest in education and a passion for the Vision of our College.

Mr Tanner is a committed professional in the Marine industry with more than 30 years’ experience at the highest levels of industry, both nationally and internationally. Mr Tanner brings a wealth of experience in strategic leadership, customer service, the development of strategic partnerships, and effective management, in addition to a deep commitment for effective governance.

Mr Tanner is a strong supporter of educational programs that enable young people to grow, not only academically but as individuals, so that they may become strong leaders and active positive contributors to society – leaders now and for the future.

Mr Tanner moved to the Gold Coast in 1988 and married Vicki on Hamilton Island in 1994, and has now raised his family in this beautiful part of our country. Being a father of two children, both alumni of the College, Mr Tanner hopes that the legacy of his guardianship of the College will be a stronger community and culture, a College that not only educates young people, but one that helps them to grow, and is well placed to educate the children of the Gold Coast for many generations to come.

Nicole Kelly is an experienced CPA, business consultant and taxation specialist known for helping, educating and supporting clients as they develop strategic plans for the future.

As an MBA, Nicole brings to the College Board over 18 years of progressive leadership and change management experience across multiple industries, geographies and scale of businesses. She possesses a unique blend of entrepreneurial spirit combined with a deep passion for both technology and business. Her skill set ranges from executive management, software development and product management, to sales and marketing.

Her passion for innovative start-ups includes the whole spectrum from conceptualisation to capital raising, design, development and implementation. She champions small business and is dedicated to crafting culture and technology that enables scalability and sustainability.

Nicole considers diversity to be the pinnacle of success and embraces lifelong learning. She also holds a Diploma of Financial Planning, is a registered tax agent, licenced real estate agent and Toastmaster. She has worked with numerous boards, serves on committees and is a graduate member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

She has been a dedicated Board member and parent of A.B. Paterson College since 2015 and Chair of the Risk and Audit Committee since 2018.

She is the founder and CEO of Gold Coast-based accounting firm, ABA Tax and software development company, Taxtank.

Nathan J Archer
Member: Board, A.B. Paterson College

Nathan Archer is an experienced corporate advisor and financial analyst having spent the past decade and a half consulting with businesses on corporate consolidations for public listings on a stock exchange, mergers and acquisitions/corporate restructure, business valuations, new market development, and strategic exit planning. He is a highly experienced capital markets advisor having traded professionally as a stockbroker and derivatives advisor for superannuation funds and high net worth clients.

Nathan holds a master’s degree in both finance and accounting, level 2 Authorised Derivatives Advisor certification and is an adjunct lecturer in finance at Griffith University.  He is also on the board of a number of charities and not-for-profit organisations.

Claire Brereton

Claire Brereton is an experienced executive, Chief Information Officer and consultant with a track record as a leader of strategic and technology change. Her experience has spanned health, state and local government, utilities, manufacturing and financial services. Much of her work has been in the health sector, developing strategies and running major implementation programs to support better health outcomes. She has run a successful consultancy business for over ten years, advising corporations and government on technology and data governance and risk.

aClaire is a chartered software engineer and, as an industry expert in IT standards, acts as a volunteer Australian representative to the International Standards Organisation. She also serves on the Queenslands IT advisory panel and the Queensland Public Health Association committee. She recently qualified as a Master of Public Health and is currently utilising her unique blend of technology, data and population health skills on a children's health research project.

Claire migrated from the UK in 2001, seeing Australia as the best country in the world to live, work, raise a family and contribute to the community.

Maurine Enderlin

Maurine Enderlin is currently the Group HR Manager for Totally Smiles. Prior to this she was Director of HR for a local not-for-profit organisation and has worked for start-ups in both the public and private sectors. 

She is a commercially focused, strategic and passionate HR professional with over 20 years’ experience working across human resources, operations and management. 

Her key strengths include strategic thinking, emotional intelligence and her ability to collaborate with executives, operational leaders, and external stakeholders. 

Maurine is a passionate champion of developing people through coaching and mentoring and enabling businesses and individuals to achieve.

Jeff McDermid, GAICD FCA

Jeff McDermid is a former partner of Ernst & Young, and the founder of his own accounting firm that grew organically to be ranked 53rd in Australia by BRW. As part of a long-term succession plan, he retired from his firm in 2011 and embarked on his new career as a professional company director. His board roles straddle the aged care, agricultural equipment, shopping centre, property development, human resources, tourism and technology industries. Jeff brings to the College Board a wide variety of skills and experience in financial management, corporate governance and strategic thinking.

Terri McGuire

Terri McGuire has a Bachelor of Business (Human Resources and Management), a Graduate Certificate in Business (Automotive Management) and is a Qualified Justice of the Peace.

Terri has experience in all sectors of retail automotive dealership management and business management in general.  She now specialises in property and asset investment and management.

Gina Palmer

Gina Palmer has devoted most of her career to secondary and higher education. As an educator, Gina innovated curriculum; pioneered the introduction of industry expert decision-making software into Australian schools; advised on syllabus developments; served as a state panel reviewer for what is now the Queensland Curriculum & Assessment Authority; developed and delivered professional development programs for teachers; reviewed software for Education Queensland; published educational resources; led marketing and fundraising initiatives; and was a curriculum coordinator at The University of Queensland Graduate School of Education - training graduates to be teachers.

In universities, Gina has been responsible for developing and coordinating several initiatives, including being the Deputy Researcher for a national ASISTM research grant, and the first-ever strategic partnership between an Australian University and an international software company for the benefit of education. 

Gina is the immediate past Faculty General Manager for the QUT Business School, where her role focused on the strategic and operational management of Australia's first business school to achieve triple international accreditation - an achievement held by less than 1% of Business Schools worldwide. In February 2016, Gina was appointed to the role of Deputy Chair of the Australian Business Deans' Council (ABDC) General Managers group comprising 43 universities and subsequently appointed the role of Chair of the group in early 2017. She has also worked in local government. 

Gina works as a performance coach and runs certification courses for coaches in her business. She is also a Board Director of the National Trust (Qld) where she is the Chair of the Nominations and Governance Committee.

Gina is an accredited practitioner with Human Synergistics and holds undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in science, education, humanities and town planning, as well as an MBA. She is also a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a Fellow of the Institute of Managers and Leaders. Over the past four years, Gina has mentored Griffith University students.

Tim Peters
Member: Board, A.B. Paterson College

Tim Peters is Chairman & Founding Partner of EDGE Consulting Engineers – a multi-disciplinary Engineering Practice with offices in Australia, New Zealand, South East Asia, the Middle East and United Kingdom. The Company is active on significant projects, in several other countries including the complex environments of Nepal, Afghanistan and South Sudan.

Tim is a Civil Engineer with his career spent predominantly in building structures. He is Chartered in Australia and New Zealand and holds a Master of Engineering from Queensland University of Technology.

He has spent much of his career in Australia, however, has been involved in engineering works associated with a number of projects of international renown including Tsing Ma Bridge in Hong Kong, The Shard in London, and Atlantis Hotel in Dubai.

He spent six years as an expatriate in Singapore and Malaysia where his three sons were born.

The family subsequently returned to the Gold Coast where the boys attended – and are now Alumni of – A.B. Paterson College.

Tim is actively involved with the School of Engineering and Built Environment at Griffith University and is a Foundation Member of the Industry Advisory Board for the School where he chairs the Civil Committee.

Tim has been an A.B. Paterson College Board member since 2008 and chairs the Infrastructure & Building Committee. He has contributed to the development of recent buildings including The Winton Centre and development of Barty’s Place in Winton.

The College Board meets monthly in full Council and focuses on policy making and review. Sub-Committees of the Board meet as deemed appropriate by the College Board.

Patron - Alan Rickard

Alan Rickard has resided on the Gold Coast since 1948, and attended Labrador Primary and Southport State High schools. He started in business in 1966, when he constructed a factory in Southport. In 1967, Alan purchased the family automotive service business which he moved into the Southport factory. The business grew to eight shops and 50 staff in Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

In 1988, Alan sold the business and, in the same year, was elected as a councillor in the Gold Coast City Council. He stayed on as a councillor until 2004 and, during that time, chaired the Finance and Economic Development Committees for 10 years and was Deputy Mayor for four years.

In 1989, Alan and a group of local residents and business people got together and promoted the establishment of A.B. Paterson College at Arundel. Alan was the founding Chair of A.B. Paterson College Ltd and served as a Director for 25 years. He has also served on the Griffith University advisory council, which he chaired for three years, on the executive of the Southport Chamber of Commerce, and is presently the President of the Save Our Broadwater community group.

Alan and his wife, Marilyn, live at Runaway Bay, enjoying an active life and retaining a keen interest in A.B. Paterson College.
