Governance

A.B. Paterson College Limited is a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee and incorporated under the Corporations Act. The College is governed by a Board of six Directors, with up to four additional Directors co-opted by the Board, to provide a broadly based set of professional skills and experiences.

A.B. Paterson College’s Governance Framework is the Foundation of the College’s Operations. The Framework provides guidance for effective decision-making in all areas of the College, through the leadership of the College’s Executive and College Board.

Chairman – David Tanner

David Tanner was elected to the Board of A.B Paterson College in 2011, and was later appointed as only the third Chairman of the Board in 2013. A current parent of the College, Mr Tanner has a significant interest in education and a passion for the Vision of our College.

Mr Tanner is a committed professional in the Marine industry with more than 30 years’ experience at the highest levels of industry, both nationally and internationally. Mr Tanner brings a wealth of experience in strategic leadership, customer service, the development of strategic partnerships, and effective management, in addition to a strong commitment for effective governance.

Mr Tanner is a strong supporter of educational programmes that enable young people to grow, not only academically but as individuals, so that they may become strong leaders and active positive contributors to society – leaders now and for the future.

Mr Tanner married the love of his life on the Gold Coast in 1994, and has now raised his family in this beautiful part of our country. Being a father of two children, both students of the College, his first interests are his children; however, he remains committed to motorsport, both as a Veteran competitor, restorer, and Chair of a National Sporting Commission. Mr Tanner has achieved at the highest level in his chosen sporting field, being the recipient of a number of National Titles.

Mr Tanner hopes that the legacy of his guardianship of the College will be a stronger community, a College that not only educates young people, but one that helps them to grow, and a College community that is well placed to educate the children of the Gold Coast for many generations to come.

Deputy Board Chair - Nicole Kelly

Nicole Kelly is a highly experienced strategic advisor, business coach and exit planning specialist. She has a passion for operational turnarounds and business development, along with a proven ability to identify opportunities for profit enhancement and expansion. She sees a disciplined approach to planning and execution as the cornerstone strength to business success.

As a Certified Professional Accountant, Tax Agent and MBA with over 15 years’ progressive leadership and change management experience, Ms Kelly has achieved success in finding the right balance of strategy, people initiatives, systems and leadership to forge positive change for her clients. Her solid understanding of business operations is reflected in the effective implementation of strategic planning initiatives that consistently deliver real business improvement.

Nathan J Archer

Nathan Archer is an experienced corporate advisor and financial analyst having spent the last decade and half consulting with businesses on corporate consolidations for public listings on a stock exchange, mergers and acquisitions/corporate restructures, business valuations, new market development, and strategic exit planning. His interest in business integration with technology led him to establish, grow and exit two tech start-up businesses, both domestically and internationally.  He is a highly experienced capital markets advisor having traded professionally as a stock broker and derivatives advisor for superannuation funds and high net worth clients.

With deep networks within the financial and technology industries, Nathan is able to provide clients tailored capital and resource options for specific projects. He holds a master’s degree in both finance and accounting, level 2 Authorised Derivatives Advisor certification and is an adjunct lecturer in finance with Griffith University.  He is also the investment committee chair of a managed fund and sits on the board of a handful of charities and not-for-profit organisations.

Claire Brereton

Claire Brereton is an experienced executive with a track record as a successful CIO (Chief Information Officer) and as a Director of not-for-profit organisations. She migrated from the UK to Australia in 2001, viewing Australia as the perfect country to work, raise her young family, and make a contribution to her community.  

Ms Brereton has qualifications in engineering and IT, and now runs a business advising companies and government organisations on IT strategy, governance and risk management. She is acknowledged as an industry expert in IT standardisation, acting as a volunteer Australian representative to the International Standards Organisation.  

Ms Brereton also serves as a Director of an IT Industry association. She lives in Brisbane with her husband, two teenage daughters and various dogs and chooks.

Maurine Enderlin

Maurine completed a Bachelor of Business, majoring in Human Resources and Management, at Griffith University, Gold Coast.  With over 19 years’ experience specialising in Human Resources, Maurine has previously worked within the hospitality, finance, state government, pharmaceutical, and health industries. 

During her career, she has formulated human resource management strategies, plans and policies.  Maurine has been involved in negotiations with unions, recruitment, and training.  She is dedicated to making a difference to organisational culture, leadership and engagement.  She has managed occupational health and safety programs and practices, and has worked with her employers to ensure they comply with related legislation.

Jeff McDermid, GAICD FCA

Jeff McDermid is a former partner of Ernst & Young, and the founder of his own accounting firm that grew organically to be ranked 53rd in Australia by BRW. As part of a long-term succession plan, he retired from his firm in 2011 and embarked on his new career as a professional Company Director. His Board roles straddle the aged care, property development, human resources, tourism and technology industries.

Mr McDermid brings to the Board of A.B. Paterson College a wide variety of skills and experience in financial management, corporate governance and strategic thinking.

Terri McGuire

Terri McGuire has a Bachelor of Business (Human Resources and Management), a Graduate Certificate in Business (Automotive Management) and is a Qualified Justice of the Peace.

Ms McGuire has experience in all sectors of retail automotive dealership management, and business management in general.  She is a Director of the Zupp Property Group, which now specialises in property and asset investment and management.

Gina Palmer

Gina Palmer has devoted most of her career to secondary and higher education. As an educator, Gina innovated curriculum; pioneered the introduction of industry expert decision-making software into Australian schools; advised on syllabus developments; served as a state panel reviewer for what is now the Queensland Curriculum & Assessment Authority; developed and delivered professional development programmes for teachers; reviewed software for Education Queensland; published educational resources; led marketing and fundraising initiatives; and was a curriculum co-ordinator at the University of Queensland Graduate School of Education - training graduates to be teachers. Her role at the University of Queensland focused on reviewing the curriculum and innovating the delivery of curriculum so that the student experience was enhanced.

In universities, Gina has been responsible for developing and co-ordinating several initiatives, including being the Deputy Researcher for a national ASISTM research grant, and the first-ever strategic partnership between an Australian University and an international software company for the benefit of education.

Gina is the immediate past Faculty General Manager for the QUT Business School, where her role focused on the strategic and operational management of Australia's first Business School to achieve triple international accreditation - an achievement held by less than 1% of Business Schools worldwide. In Febrauary 2016, Gina was appointed to the role of Deputy Chair of the Australian Business Deans' Council (ABDC) General Managers group comprising 43 universities and subsequently appointed the role of Chair of the group in early 2017. During her time with ABDC, Gina led, coordinated and implemented governance, strategy and professional development. Gina has also worked in local government and was responsible for the development and implementation of a major initiative that was recognised by the International Association of the Public Participation.  Gina is currently a consultant and a Board Director of the National Trust (Qld) where she is also a member of the Nominations Committee.

Gina is an accredited practitioner with Human Synergistics and holds undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in science, education, humanities and town planning, as well as an MBA. She is also a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a Fellow of the Institute of Managers and Leaders.

Tim Peters
Member: Board, A.B. Paterson College

Tim Peters is Chairman and Joint Founding Partner of ADG Engineers.  He is responsible for the group’s development in both Australia and overseas, which has grown into a full multi-disciplinary company with 12 offices and 160 staff.

Mr Peters has extensive experience in numerous large scale building projects in Australia, Asia, Middle East, United Kingdom and India.  He has particular expertise in the use of post-tensioned solutions for building structures, and is recognised for delivery of budget conscious buildable solutions. 

Mr Peters sits on the Academic Advisory Committee for the School of Engineering at Griffith University, has lectured on post tensioning at Griffith University, and is a member of the A.B. Paterson College Board.

Warren Tapp
Member: Board, A.B. Paterson College

Chair: Foundation Board

Warren is an experienced Company Director with an interest in Education. Until 2016 he was the Chair of TAFE Queensland and a Council member at the Queensland University of Technology. He has been a Chair or Director of many Boards in the Commercial and Not for Profit sectors and has owned his own business providing Corporate Governance advice to Boards. He is a strong believer that every Board must operate effectively to provide strategic direction and risk overview to management of any organization.  He is keen to lead the Foundation Board to develop ways to raise funds to help ensure the long term future of A.B. Paterson College in a challenging society.

His qualifications include an MBA and Master of Laws as well as a Graduate Diploma of Applied Corporate Governance. Warren is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He lives on the Gold Coast and enjoys boating and tennis and time with his grandchildren and family. Warren often quotes the late Nelson Mandela who said, "Education is the key to a country’s future", and he is pleased to contribute to the future of A.B. Paterson College and every student who passes through it.

The College Board meets monthly in full Council, and focuses on policy making and review. Sub-Committees of the Board meet as deemed appropriate by the College Board.

Patron - Alan Rickard

Alan Rickard has resided on the Gold Coast since 1948, and attended Labrador Primary and Southport State High schools. He started in business in 1966, when he constructed a factory in Southport. In 1967, Alan purchased the family automotive service business which he moved into the Southport factory. The business grew to eight shops and 50 staff in Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

In 1988, Alan sold the business and, in the same year, was elected as a councillor in the Gold Coast City Council. He stayed on as a councillor until 2004 and, during that time, chaired the Finance and Economic Development Committees for 10 years and was Deputy Mayor for four years.

In 1989, Alan and a group of local residents and business people got together and promoted the establishment of A.B. Paterson College at Arundel. Alan was the founding Chair of A.B. Paterson College Ltd and served as a Director for 25 years. He has also served on the Griffith University advisory council, which he chaired for three years, on the executive of the Southport Chamber of Commerce, and is presently the President of the Save Our Broadwater community group.

Alan and his wife, Marilyn, live at Runaway Bay, enjoying an active life and retaining a keen interest in A.B. Paterson College.
