On May 10, Mr Steve Marshall, Region Commissioner Gold Coast, awarded Year 10 student, Sofie Cripps the Australian Scout Medallion. The ceremony was attended by a number of Sofie’s Burleigh Heads Scout Leaders over the past seven years who have seen her progress through the Joey, Cub and finally the Scout sections of the Scouting movement.
The Australian Scout Medallion is the highest achievement for a Scout, in the Scout section, to provide an additional challenge for top Scouts. Sofie was required to demonstrate competency in a number of topics through her badge work, as well as plan, undertake, evaluate and write a report on an adventurous project, to demonstrate in a practical way, her leadership knowledge and skills that she leant throughout her time as a Scout. The project is supervised by an adult Troop Leader.
Sofie’s adventurous activity involved a 3-day, 30 km hike with her Patrol of 5 Scouts through the Numinbah Valley. The hike was unaccompanied by an adult. Nearly 10 km of her hike was off trail where she relied on her orientation skills to safely navigate her patrol cross country. An examiner was appointed by the Region Commissioner to assess the completed project report.
