A.B. Paterson College students, Noah Fielding, Leon Dang and Jaxon Arnold are celebrating a huge Rugby victory.
On August 24, the boys – together with their teammates from Helensvale Hogs – competed in the Gold Coast District Rugby Union Under 17’s Grand Final at Bond University Rugby Fields.
A.B. Paterson College student, Matthew Hickey is also a part of this team but sadly was running water due to a season-ending ankle injury.
The boys came into the Final as Minor Premiers and had gone undefeated the whole season. While they were favourite to win, Grand Final nerves and excitement always play a part.
Early first half nerves were certainly impacting the game with the score at 12-0 to Griffith University Knights. There were four chances for the Hogs to go over, but each time something went wrong!
Fortunately, the crowd was right behind our boys as the Hoggies Roar went up, helping the players to regain focus and control.
Due to the sheer size and power of the Knights, the A.B. players needed every word of encouragement from their coaches to sink in at half time, with the score sitting at 12-5.
The crowd’s excitement grew in the 2nd half, and it was so special for the boys to see not only their familiar Hogs family in the crowd but also teachers, Mr Mikael and Mr Dilkes, and a whole group of A.B. Paterson College students and parents cheering them on.
Thankfully the tables turned, and the Forwards took control, pushing through the 120kg+ defence line before Hogs took the win 24-17!
What a Year! Congratulations Boys – Junior Gold Coast Rugby Champions!
