When Opportunity Knocks…

Every Open Day, our College takes great pride when we witness our student tour leaders confidently guiding prospective families around our beautiful campus.

It was during our April 2018 Open Day that one student – Georgia Downey – seized a golden opportunity, after greeting a family.

Here she reveals how a chance meeting may well influence her future career.

“I have always been interested in Law, so when I had the opportunity to tour Daniel Samuel, his wife and their child around our College for Open Day I couldn’t help but be intrigued when he shared that he was a lawyer. With my graduation just around the corner, and my need to start thinking about what I wanted to do after school, I took the opportunity to talk to Daniel during the tour about studying Law and his experiences as a lawyer. When the tour commenced, Daniel offered me work experience at his law firm, Paddingtons Lawyers and Attorneys. I immediately knew that I had been presented with an amazing opportunity and, despite it being a daunting thing to organise and partake in, I chose to pursue the offer and attend work experience during the June/July holidays from the 27th-29th of June.

Over the course of the three days I acquired an insight into what it is like to work in this industry and found that I was drawn to the atmosphere and type of work undertaken at the firm. The firm was relatively small, which fostered a comfortable workplace environment where everyone was extremely welcoming and easy-going! On the first day I was shown around the firm, met the other employees and was given my own desk to carry out work set out to me. The three days entailed not only shadowing Daniel with his work but also being able to sit in on his client meetings, doing research and writing summaries to help aid client matters, as well as editing documents.

After commencing the experience, I was offered a part-time job at the firm which I will be doing during the September holidays. I was amazed that I had been offered a job out of it and overall, I can say the experience was every bit worthwhile as it was incredible.  I am extremely grateful for the opportunity I was presented with and glad I pursued the work experience, which has now helped me choose what course I want to do at University.”
