Year 12 student, Alice Zhang has made history as part of the first Australian team to compete at the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO).
Alice’s selection in the team was top secret, with the official announcement made just hours before the Aussie team of four girls boarded a flight for Florence, Italy!
The Australian team was farewelled with a personal video message from 2018 Australian of the Year, Professor Michelle Simmons. You can watch the video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfft_VJaHsk&feature=youtu.be
Alice felt extremely honoured and proud to have been selected to compete against 50 countries. She loved the opportunity to get to know so many other impressive and talented young women from around the world and to explore such a stunning European city.
The competition involves answering a number of mathematical questions in two papers, held over two consecutive days.
It is hard to comprehend competition at that level, but Alice was calm, collected and put all her training to the test.
All her study and hard work paid off as Alice ended the competition with a brilliant result. She received a bronze medal!! Overall, the Australian team placed 20th in the world. This is an amazing achievement and everybody here at the College is so proud of Alice.
You can read more about Alice’s selection in the Australian team in the soon-to-be-released edition of Vision Splendid.
