Hope is, in itself, a wonderful theme for our lives, and is – in fact – an important ingredient for a happy life.
Our 2017 year has almost come to a close and our students are counting down the final days to the commencement of the holidays. Given this, I thought it was appropriate for me to share a few of my deepest hopes for our community with you. In essence, it is my most sincere hope that this year has been one of great friendship, growth and learning for all.
I hope our staff have enjoyed numerous opportunities that – not only sustained them, but also – nurtured them, and enabled them to see the importance of all they do. I hope they have been inspired by those around them and by the great leaders, both current and past. I hope they have been truly appreciated by both students and parents alike, and that they hear words of encouragement from all who have depended on their service.
I hope our students found the courage and confidence to seek the many opportunities that were available to them; that they have sought the advice and counsel of staff and parents; and sought to do the little things right – to wear our uniform with pride; to treat all others with respect and dignity; and to always do what is right and proper. I hope every child has felt valued, loved and cared for at all times – even when they have made mistakes. I hope that they have applied themselves to all they have done and that they have supported their teachers. Finally, I hope they have been appreciative of the sacrifices that you as parents have made in sending them to our College, and have openly thanked you most sincerely.
I hope that you, our parents have had a wonderful year too. There is no more challenging role than being a parent. There are times when you feel alone, when you hurt for your child, when you worry about them, times of despair and of great elation, wonderment, excitement and pride. The emotions of a parent are quite unlike anything else we could imagine – and we would never swap them for anything else!I do sincerely hope that, as parents, you are proud of your children, proud of their development and proud of your College. I hope you have felt supported by staff as, together, we do our best to educate and raise your children – a task of great significance and importance to us all. I hope you recognise that our staff care greatly for each and every child, and that they are tasked with a role that few in society would accept. I hope you have felt welcome in our College and that you have made all others feel welcome too.
Culture is owned by all in the community, and I hope that we have all made a serious effort in creating the positive, caring, and empowering community we all wish for. I hope for the day in which we see laughter, love and life in all engagements and interactions.
In the words of the ancient Greek philosopher, Epicurus: “Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for.”
Let our collective hopes, not our disappointments, shape our future and give us the strength and conviction to be unified and support all in everything we do.
